50-year-olds in Gothenburg
The objective of the study has been to investigate coronary risk factors and development of coronary heart disease in a group of Swedish urban men of the same age: 50 years. Also, to investigate the risk of cardiovascular diseases among 50-year-old women.

Participants born in 1913 participated in the survey when they were 50 years old and were followed up when they were 54, 60, 67, 75 and 80 years old.

Since 1963, the study has been filled with new 50-year-olds, and since 2003 women are also included in the study. New samples of 50-year-old men were drawn in 1973, 1983, 1993-1994, 2003-2004 and 2013-2014.

In 1963, a sample was drawn from the Swedish population register consisting of all the men born in 1913 on a day divisible by three (e.g. the third, sixth, ninth day, and so on, of each month) and living in the city of Gothenburg.
These criteria were met by 973 men, of whom 855 (87.9%) participated in the study.
In addition, new cross-sectional samples of men born in 1913 and living in the city of Gothenburg were selected in 1973, 1980, 1988 and 1993 using the same criteria as in 1963.

In 1973, 30-year-old sons to the 50YMG - born 1913 population recruited in 1963, were asked to participate in a baseline examination. Only 263 subjects met the age selection criteria and were included in the study. In 1980, a new sample of 30-year-old sons to men born in 1913 were recruited via the National Board of Health and Welfare's register.
