The population is composed of women living in Gothenburg aged 39 to 65 years and without prior cardiovascular disease. None of the women were pregnant when the study started.

A random sample of the female population in Gothenburg born between 1915 and 1941 were invited to a screening examination. Questionnaire was sent to all subjects along with an invitation to the study.
