European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition - Turin
EPIC is a multi-centre prospective cohort based on healthy, middle-aged subjects who agree, following an active invitation, to participate in the study and to have their health status followed-up for the rest of their lives. The study is based in ten European countries and includes populations characterized by large variations in dietary habits and cancer risk.
The EPIC study aims to investigate the relationships between diet, nutritional status, lifestyle and environmental factors, and the incidence of cancer and other chronic diseases.
The Turin component of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) is a prospective cohort of 10,604 men and women living in the city of Turin, Northern Italy, some of whom are blood donors and healthy volunteers.
One of the main objectives of the Turin component of The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) is to examine the role of diet-related exposure in the etiology of cancer and its interaction with other environmental and/or genetic determinants. The main field of research in the EPIC-Turin Study is molecular epidemiology, particularly on the formation of haemoglobin and DNA adducts in relation to tobacco smoking and on the role of metabolic polymorphisms.
