Genomes for life
The main objective of GCAT is to integrate and to assess the role of genomic, epigenomic, environmental and lifestyle factors in the development of major chronic diseases (e.g. cancer, cardiovascular, respiratory, autoimmune, neurological or metabolic diseases) in Catalonia, Spain. Furthermore, GCAT aimed to assess the prevalence of epidemiological and genetic risk factors associated with the incidence of chronic diseases.

The active first follow-up through web-based questionnaire began in March 2018 and ended in December 2018. Electronic Health Register linking participants from Public Health Care System begins in January 2019 and will then be followed annually.

Timeline
Population
The population is composed of residents of Catalonia, Spain, aged 40 to 65 years old. Participants should not have mental or health impairment disorders and should not be planning to leave Catalonia within the 5 years post-recruitment.

- Participants should not have mental or health impairment disorders that impede giving written informed consent or efficient communication.
- Other Criteria
- Participants should be able to understand at least one of the two official languages (Catalan or Spanish), possess an Individual Health System Identification Card, and be current residents of Catalonia.

Participants that plan to leave Catalonia within the next 5 years after recruitment are excluded.

Participants are mostly enrolled from blood donors invited through the Blood and Tissue Bank (BST), a public agency of the Catalan department of Health. The recruitment procedures include phone call, mail, GCAT web site or in person. Participants have to present themselves at a recruitment centre (11 permanent + additional temporary centres across Catalonia).
