Hisayama Study
The Hisayama Study is an ongoing population-based prospective cohort study in the town of Hisayama, a suburb of the Fukuoka metropolitan area in the southern part of Japan. This study was started in 1961 to determine the prevalence and incidence of cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases and their risk factors. In addition, comprehensive surveys of cognitive impairment in the elderly living in this town have been conducted since 1985.

The participants were followed up by repeated comprehensive health examinations every 2-3 years until 1974 and then every 5 years after that, in addition to usual annual health check-ups.
Comprehensive surveys of cognitive impairment in the elderly living in Hisayama town were also conducted every 6-7 years since 1985 (1985, 1992, 1998, 2005, and 2012).
