Northern Manhattan Study
The Northern Manhattan Stroke Study is an ongoing population-based study designed to evaluate the incidence of stroke and identify novel risk factors in a multiethnic urban community.

All participants were enrolled between 1993 and 2001. All participants were prospectively followed annually by telephone. A 10% random sample of the cohort was followed annually in-person for 5 years.

Population
Community participants were eligible if they: (1) had never been diagnosed with stroke; (2) were 40 years and older; and (3) resided in Northern Manhattan for at least three months in a household with a telephone.
