Prospective Population Study of Women in Göteborg

The aim of the Population Study of Women in Gothenburg (PSWG) was to measure key health indicators for the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, dementia, and other mental illnesses in women aged over their adult life course.

Information about smoking habits, alcohol, education, and occupation was collected through questionnaires. Data about mental health was collected from a psychiatric interview. Physical measures were taken such as blood pressure, height, weight, BMI, circumferences of the waist and hip, waist-to-hip ratio, and skinfold thickness. Blood samples were collected.

Data from the Swedish national register on deaths due to specific causes has been collected.

Information about smoking habits alcohol, education, lifestyle, occupation and psychological health was obtained by means of a standardized interview. Physical measurement as height, weigth, circumferences of the waist and hip, skinfold thickness, blood pressure were taken. Blood samples were collected. Information from the Swedish National Death Registry was obtained which include the principal cause of death for no surviving subjects.

A personal history describing for example social background, education, marital status, exercise, smoking and alcohol consumption was obtained. Anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, body height and body weight were measured and BMI was calculated. Blood samples were drawn.

An updated interview describing medical history, drug consumption, diet and lifestyle characteristics was performed. Audiologic and movement examinations, ECG, anthropometric measurement, blood pressure and pulse rate were performed. Functional status was measured through the ADL scale. All women underwent neuropsychiatric examination. Blood and urine samplig were taken.

Information on socio-economic status, civil status smoking habits and physical activity and drug comsumption has been provided by questionnaires. Functional status was measured through the ADL scale (Activities of Daily Living). Anthropometric measurements, neuropsychiatric examination, blood and urine sampling, ECG, Peak Expiratory Flow(PEF), blood pressure and pulse rate has been taken. Information concerning hospital care during 2001-2003 wars obtained from the National Hospital Register.

PPSW population

The population is composed of women living in Gothenburg, Sweden and ranging in age from 26, 38, 46, 54, or 60 years old at their baseline examinations.

Women were selected to participate if they were born in the years 1908, 1914, 1918, 1922, 1930, 1942, or 1954 and on days ending with 6, 12, 18, 24 or 30.

Supplementary Information

During the second follow-up (1988-1990) two new age groups of 26 and 38 were included. During the fifth follow-up, a new group aged 38 in 2004 was included in the study. During the sixth follow-up, another group of participants aged 38 in 2016 was included.
