Participants of WHICAP I were followed-up at intervals of 24 months and the participants of WHICAP II are followed-up at intervals of 18 months for a maximum of 4 assessments (baseline + 3 follow-ups).

Participants were healthy Medicare beneficiaries without dementia, aged 65 years and older in 1992-1994, and residing in 3 contiguous ZIP codes within the community of Washington Heights in northern New York City.

The WHICAP II cohort represents a combination of continuing participants of WHICAP I (n = 602) and newly recruited participants (n = 2183). Participants were again healthy Medicare beneficiaries without dementia, aged 65 years and older in 1999-2001, and residing in 3 contiguous ZIP codes within the community of Washington Heights in northern New York City.
